SINGING THERAPY
"I plan to get your software that shows the making of individual sounds. I think that may really help. Also, it was quite interesting yesterday. I happened to sing the first few words of a song pertaining to a situation, and she sang the next few words perfectly. Neither of us can carry a tune, but singing is actually the way she started talking. Keep up the good work and the newsletters"

This is called Melodic Intonation Therapy. It can be a helpful starting point, especially when the survivor is producing very little spontaneous speech. See this month's "Recovery Resource" (#4, below) for more on this topic.

Learning to move their limbs comes naturally to human beings….but only once. After childhood it becomes increasingly hard to improve our physical co-ordination and motor skills. For stroke victims, re-learning how to move paralyzed body parts is a long and arduous process that many never fully achieve. A new robot could change all that. Read the complete story at:

MELODIC INTONATION THERAPY
"An interesting aspect to the treatment of stroke related communication disorders is that the use of musical principles, such as rhythm and melody, may help create speech that he or she could not otherwise produce. This technique, known as melodic intonation theory, works because it activates areas in the right side of the brain which can join with areas in the damaged left side of the brain, to produce speech."
Our speech pathologist (Terri Nichols) had this to add:
"This treatment approach can be a great way to get someone started back to talking, if they have very little speech at all. Its only drawback is often a person's reluctance to carry this melodic speech pattern over into everyday conversation."

TECHNO-GEEK DETAILS: they actually use animated GIFs to simulate video. This makes the files small and compatible with nearly all web browsers.

THE 4 RABBI'S
So it seems that these four rabbis had a series of theological
arguments, and three were always in accord against the fourth.
One day, the odd rabbi out, after the usual "3 to 1, majority
rules" statement that signified that he had lost again, decided
to appeal to a higher authority.
"Oh, God!" he cried. "I know in my heart that I am right and
they are wrong! Please give me a sign to prove it to them!"
It was a beautiful, sunny day. As soon as the rabbi finished his
prayer, a storm cloud moved across the sky above the four. It
rumbled once and dissolved. "A sign from God! See, I'm right, I
knew it!" But the other three disagreed, pointing out that storm
clouds form on hot days.
So the rabbi prayed again: "Oh, God, I need a bigger sign to
show that I am right and they are wrong. So please, God, a
bigger sign!" This time four storm clouds appeared, rushed
toward each other to form one big cloud, and a bolt of lightning
slammed into a tree on a nearby hill.
"I told you I was right!" cried the rabbi, but his friends insisted
that nothing had happened that could not be explained by
natural causes.
The rabbi was getting ready to ask for a *very big* sign, but just
as he said, "Oh God...," the sky turned pitch black, the earth
shook, and a deep, booming voice intoned, "HEEEEEEEE'S
RIIIIIIIGHT!"
The rabbi put his hands on his hips, turned to the other three,
and said, "Well?"
"So," shrugged one of the other rabbis, "now it's 3 to 2."
